Your Toilet Is Running, and It Is Costing More Than You Think

A running toilet feels like a background noise problem. It is actually a money problem: a bad flapper can quietly send hundreds of gallons a day to the sewer, which shows up on a Victorville water bill fast. Here is how to read what your toilet is telling you.

The thirty-second dye test

Drop food coloring in the tank. Wait twenty minutes without flushing. Color in the bowl means water is slipping past the flapper, and that toilet runs all day whether you hear it or not.

What each sound means

  • Refill kicks on for a few seconds every so often. The classic phantom flush. Flapper is leaking, tank drops, fill valve tops it up, forever.
  • Constant hiss. Fill valve never fully shuts, or the float is set too high and water is trickling down the overflow tube.
  • A groan or bang when it refills. Aging fill valve, or pressure in the house running higher than it should, which is its own conversation about pressure problems and regulators.

When it is a five-dollar part and when it is not

Flappers and fill valves are honest, cheap fixes and a handy homeowner can do them. Where it stops being simple: hard water scale on the seat under the flapper that keeps every new flapper leaking, hairline cracks in the tank, a toilet from the 1990s that eats parts, or a wax ring letting water creep at the base. Water at the base of a toilet is never a wait-and-see item, that is subfloor damage in progress, and it is time for a proper repair or, for the old fighters, a modern replacement that flushes better on half the water.

The bill is the tiebreaker

If your water bill has crept up and the dye test comes back positive, fixing the toilet usually pays for itself inside a few months. We fix it with a firm price before we touch it, and if the honest answer is a new flapper and nothing else, that is exactly what you will hear from us.
