Shower repair, from drips to dead valves

A shower that drips all night, runs lukewarm at full hot, or whistles behind the wall has a fixable cause. We repair shower valves, cartridges, diverters, and drains, usually without touching the tile.

Valve work behind the wall

The photo on this page is the patient: an aging two-handle shower valve in the tile, the kind that drips through worn seats and stems. Most shower repairs are exactly this, cartridges, seats, and washers replaced through the existing trim, no tile saw involved. Where a valve body itself has failed, we can usually work through an access panel or a modest opening behind the wall rather than through your tile.

Temperature problems live here too: a shower that scalds when the toilet flushes needs a pressure-balancing cartridge or valve, and a shower that never gets hot enough usually has a mis-set limit stop, a two-minute fix people live with for years.

How the job goes

1

Plan on paper first

Drain routes, venting, and capacity decide what a design can do. We flag the expensive moves while they still cost nothing.

2

Rough in precisely

Valves at finish depth, drains on slope, supplies secured. The finish trades build on our accuracy, so it has to be exact.

3

Test before walls close

Pressure on the supplies, flow on the drains, photos for your file. Nothing gets sealed in unproven.

4

Trim out and commission

Fixtures set, appliances connected, everything run while you watch. The punch list ends at zero.

Diverters, heads, and drains

A tub spout diverter that sends half the water to the head and half to your feet wastes the morning; we rebuild or replace them properly. Shower heads scaled to a dribble get descaled or upgraded. And a shower that drains slow enough to make a pond gets the drain snaked and the cause identified, hair is the usual, but tile-era mortar in the trap has surprised more than one homeowner up here.

If the repair conversation reveals a shower at the end of its life, we price a proper replacement honestly next to the patch, and you choose with real numbers.

Out here, the desert writes the rules

Hard desert water kills shower cartridges young, scale scores the ceramic until they weep, so the same repair on the coast lasts twice as long here. Quality cartridges plus a softener upstream is how we break that cycle for good.

We don’t come back to fix the same thing twice. It’s correct the first time.

“Ruben came out promptly, took the time to walk me through the current issues I was facing, and explained the different options available. He did an excellent job, hauled away the old unit and left the area spotless.”

Asked at the front door

Can you fix my shower valve without breaking the tile?

Usually yes: cartridges, stems, seats, and trim all service through the existing openings, and full valve replacements frequently work through an access panel from behind. Tile demolition is the last resort, not the first move, and we tell you honestly which situation you have.

Why does my shower go scalding when someone flushes?

Your valve lacks working pressure balance, when the toilet steals cold water, the mix tips hot. Modern pressure-balancing cartridges and valves fix it completely, and in homes with kids or elders it is a safety fix, not a luxury.

My shower never gets fully hot. Is the water heater dying?

Check the easy suspect first: shower valves have a temperature limit stop, and it may simply be set low or drifted. If the rest of the house runs hot, the valve is the likely story, and adjusting or rebuilding it is quick work.

What is that whistle or moan when the shower runs?

Flow noise from a scaled cartridge, a failing washer, or pressure that is set too high. It is diagnosable in one visit, and it is your plumbing asking politely before it starts asking expensively.

Do you repair shower drains too?

Yes, slow drains, leaking drain shoes, and the mystery stains on the ceiling below. A leaking shower drain does quiet damage, so a same-week look is smart money when the ceiling starts hinting.
