Blue-green stains under faucets, pinhole leaks in young copper, a metallic taste at the tap: acidic water dissolves plumbing from the inside. A neutralizer raises the pH and ends the slow-motion damage.
Reading the stains
Water with low pH is hungry, it pulls copper off your pipes and zinc off your fittings on the way to the tap. The evidence shows up as blue-green staining in sinks and tubs, metallic taste, and eventually the pinhole leaks that make aggressive water expensive. It is mostly a well-water problem, some desert aquifers run acidic where others run hard, and a pH test settles the question in minutes.
A neutralizer is a tank of calcite or blended media that dissolves slightly into the water as it passes, raising the pH into the neutral range where it stops attacking metal. Simple, passive, and effective when sized right.

Sizing, tradeoffs, and the honest fine print
Neutralizing media adds a little hardness back to the water by design, that is literally how it works, so on some wells the right answer is a neutralizer followed by a softener, and we will tell you honestly when your chemistry calls for both. Media dissolves with use and gets topped up on a schedule, typically yearly, a ten-minute service we can handle on a maintenance cycle.
If your copper has already been eaten thin, we pair treatment with honest pipe assessment through our pipe repair and repiping work, fixing the water without checking the damage it did is half a job.
How the High Desert changes this job
Acidic wells are the minority out here next to hard ones, but they exist in pockets around the basin, and the blue-green stain is the tell locals learn to recognize. If your fixtures are staining teal on a well anywhere from Phelan to Twentynine Palms, test the pH this month.

Straight answers first
What causes blue-green stains in my sinks?
Acidic water dissolving copper from your own pipes and depositing it where the water dries. It is the visible symptom of invisible pipe damage, and a pH test confirms it in minutes. Treatment is straightforward once the number is known.
Will a neutralizer make my water hard?
It adds some hardness by nature, calcite is a calcium media, and on already-hard water that matters. The honest design is neutralizer first, softener after where the chemistry calls for it, and we lay out the real tradeoff before you buy anything.
How often does the media need topping up?
Typically yearly, the media sacrifices itself to protect your pipes, which is the whole idea. It is a quick, inexpensive service, and we track it on a schedule so the tank never quietly runs empty.
Has acidic water already ruined my plumbing?
That is worth actually checking rather than fearing. We assess visible pipe, look at any pinhole history, and give you a straight answer about what is worn versus what is fine. Frequently the treatment arrives in time; occasionally sections have to be replaced, and you deserve to know which.
Is this a city water problem too?
Rarely, municipal systems are required to control corrosivity. It is overwhelmingly a private-well issue in scattered pockets, which is why testing your specific well matters more than anything the neighbors report.
