A sump pump has one job on the one night that matters. We repair pumps that will not start, will not stop, or scream while they run, and we test the whole pit so monsoon season is a spectator sport.
The failure modes we see
A pump that will not start is usually a stuck or waterlogged float, a dead switch, or a seized impeller, all diagnosable in one visit. A pump that never shuts off is burning itself alive on a jammed float or a check valve letting the same water return endlessly. Grinding and rattling is debris in the impeller or bearings on their way out, and it deserves attention before the next big rain, not after.
We test the pit end to end: float travel, check valve, discharge flow, and the electrical connection that everything depends on.

Diagnose honestly
Rebuild or replace gets decided by the fixture’s bones, not by the biggest invoice. Plenty of visits end cheaper than the caller feared.
Install on sound connections
New supplies, working shutoffs, sealed drains. The connections behind the fixture matter more than the shine on it.
Run it while we watch
Full cycles, full flushes, dry floors confirmed. Old fixtures and packaging leave with us.
Repair, replace, and the backup question
Seals, switches, floats, and check valves are honest repairs. A pump motor past its service life is not, and we price replacement next to repair honestly. The bigger conversation is backup: the storm that floods your pit is statistically the same storm that drops your power, and a battery backup pump is what stands between that coincidence and a wet floor.
Every repair visit ends with a full test fill, because a sump pump you have not watched run is a rumor, not a system.

Straight answers first
How do I test my sump pump before storm season?
Pour a bucket of water into the pit until the float rises: the pump should start, clear the water fast, and shut off cleanly without cycling. Anything else, screeching, endless running, no start, earns a service call before the clouds do.
Why does my pump run every few minutes with no rain?
Either groundwater genuinely feeds your pit, or the check valve has failed and the same water keeps falling back in, or the float is set wrong. The middle one is most common and it is a quick, cheap fix that saves the motor.
My pump hums but does not pump. What is that?
A seized impeller or a failed start component: the motor is trying and losing. Kill the power to it and call us, running it in that state finishes the motor off.
Do I really need a battery backup pump?
If the water that threatens your space arrives with storms, yes, because those storms also take the power out. A battery backup covers the exact hours your primary is most likely to be dead. It is the single best upgrade in sump work.
How often should a sump system be serviced?
A yearly check before monsoon season: float, check valve, discharge, and a live test fill. Ten minutes of prevention against the one night the pit fills for real.
