High Desert winters split pipes every year, and the mountain towns lose count. We thaw frozen lines safely, repair what the ice cracked, and harden the plumbing so next January is somebody else’s story.
Thawing is a skill, not a blowtorch
A frozen pipe is a pipe under stress, and the wrong thaw finishes what the ice started. We locate the freeze, open the right faucets to relieve pressure, and warm the line gradually from the open end back, watching for the cracks that ice leaves behind. Torching a frozen line against a wall stud is how houses burn down, and it happens somewhere every winter.
Once water moves, we pressure-test the run, because a pipe that froze hard is frequently a pipe that split quietly. Finding the crack now beats finding it when the ceiling does.

If water is moving, we walk you to the shutoff over the phone while the truck rolls. Minutes matter and we treat them that way.
Locate before opening
Acoustic gear, pressure isolation, and meter logic find the failure before anything gets cut. One opening, at the right spot.
Fix the cause, not the symptom
The failed section gets rebuilt to sound pipe, and the reason it failed, pressure, freeze, age, gets named and addressed.
Test under pressure
Every repair holds pressure while you watch before walls close. Correct the first time, proven, not promised.
Making sure it does not refreeze
The pipe froze because it was exposed: an uninsulated run through a garage wall, a hose bib without a cover, a cabin crawl space open to the wind. We fix the cause with proper pipe insulation, heat cable where it earns its keep, frost-free hose bibs, and rerouting for the runs that never should have been in a cold wall to begin with.
For cabins that sit empty, we set up smart shutoff monitoring so a freeze failure closes the main automatically instead of running for a week.
Out here, the desert writes the rules
Wrightwood, Big Bear Lake, and the Phelan high ground freeze hard every winter, and even Victorville and Hesperia drop into the twenties on clear January nights. The calls come in waves the morning after every snap, so putting insulation on the calendar in October is the smart version.

A pipe is frozen right now. What do I do first?
Open the affected faucet so melting ice has somewhere to relieve pressure, and find your main shutoff so you can close it fast if the pipe has split. Then call us, we answer around the clock Monday through Saturday, and do not put an open flame anywhere near it.
How do you thaw pipes without damage?
Gradually, from the open end back, with controlled heat and constant checks. Fast, concentrated heat cracks fittings and starts fires. Patience plus a pressure test at the end is the professional version.
The pipe thawed on its own. Am I in the clear?
Maybe not. Ice splits pipes quietly and the leak only shows once water flows again. If a line froze hard, a quick pressure check is cheap insurance against a wall full of water next week.
What should mountain cabin owners do before winter?
Insulate exposed runs, cover or upgrade hose bibs, know the shutoff, and if the cabin sits empty, add a smart shutoff valve that closes the main when something fails. We do winterization visits every fall, book before the first storm.
Does PEX really survive freezes better?
It tolerates expansion far better than rigid pipe, which is one reason we favor it in repipes up here. It is not invincible, fittings still crack, but it turns most freeze events from a flood into a non-story.
