Five Signs There Is a Slab Leak Under Your House

A slab leak is a pipe leaking under the concrete your house sits on. Because you cannot see it, it announces itself in strange ways, and the earlier you catch the announcement the smaller the repair. Here is what we tell homeowners in Victorville, Hesperia, and Apple Valley to watch for.

1. A water bill that jumped for no reason

Same household, same habits, bill up by half. Water is going somewhere, and if no faucet or toilet explains it, the slab is a suspect.

2. Warm spots on the floor

A hot-side slab leak quietly heats the concrete above it. If the dog has a new favorite spot on the tile in January, trust the dog.

3. The sound of running water when everything is off

Stand in the quiet house and listen. A faint hiss or trickle with every fixture closed means pressurized water is escaping somewhere.

4. Cracks, damp baseboards, or lifted flooring

Water under the slab has to go somewhere. It wicks up through concrete, swells wood floors, and shows up as mystery damp at the bottom of a wall.

5. Low pressure at every fixture at once

One weak shower is a fixture problem. The whole house going weak together can mean the main line under the slab is bleeding off pressure.

The meter test you can run in five minutes

Turn off every fixture and appliance that uses water. Go watch your meter. If the little leak indicator is still spinning, you have your answer, and it is time to call.

What we do differently: find it, then open one spot

The old way was jackhammering on a hunch. We locate first, with electronic leak detection and a camera, so the concrete opens in exactly one place. Then you get a firm price for the repair before any dust flies. Depending on the pipe’s age, sometimes the honest recommendation is a reroute or a repipe instead of chasing the next leak in a failing line, and we will tell you that straight.

Suspect a slab leak? Do not wait on it, water under a foundation only gets more expensive. (877) 233-1033, 24 hours, Monday through Saturday.
